U8s Girls vs. Wrenthorpe

Wakefield Owls U8s girls played at home this morning. Their first match in their brand new kit proudly showing off their sponsor Integrated Third Party Logistics Limited - thank you from all the girls.

Quiet start for the girls within first quarter whilst they found their feet within the match. Some good defending and tackling by Esmai and Poppy saw a lovely interception which was fed into Ellie who sprinted up pitch and took a shot straight into the bottom right corner to see Owls go 1-0 up.

Molly pulled off some great saves as Wrenthorpe fed the ball up the pitch and heavily attacked. A one on one saw a fabulous save which was finished from the rebound to level the scores at 1-1.

Wrenthorpe continued to put pressure on our defence which saw them bag another 2 goals. The girls remained in high spirits and fed the ball up pitch to Lena who was so unlucky not to get onto the score board with a shot just wide of the target.

Quarter 2 started with another 2 goals for Wrenthorpe who continued to put pressure on the Owls defence but a fabulous tackle from Izzy near the corner flag saw her turn and send the ball upfield, she followed after it, getting the ball back and deserved a goal but unfortunately hit the post and was quickly cleared out of the box. Score at the end of the first half being 5-1.

Half time team talk was trying to keep the girls positive and talking about passing the ball more.

What can we say…..they definitely listened and the game saw the girls use each other more throughout the second half which showed in their performance. A lovely ball was fed into Izzy who had a go from a few yards outside the box taking the keeper by surprise. She shoots, she scores to take the game to 5-2. Owls had started the third quarter with a great mindset and although Wrenthorpe continued their attacks Molly battled hard in defence to win the ball and take off down the wing, her speed saw her fly past the defence and a lovely shot sped past the keeper, 5-3.

As Wrenthorpe pulled their socks up and settled back into the game saw them bag another 2 goals to end the third quarter at 7-3.

The 4th quarter saw Izzy in goal with some super saves and good distribution of the ball. The girls battled well with some good tackles by Molly & Poppy who in turn fed the ball up to Lena & Esmai and onto Ellie who was able to hit the back of the net again.

Wrenthorpe had gone a little quiet and Owls had stepped up a gear to gain possession and send it into the box, a shot by Ellie was saved by the keeper but saw the back of the net from the rebound.

Final score Owls 5 Wrenthorpe 7

The girls put up a good fight against an established team and played some great football today and we are all so proud of each and every one of them! We missed Amy but can’t wait to have her back next week.

Big shout out to the parents who helped with setting up and clearing away of the equipment and running the tuck shop.

My final mention today is for U13s Sophie who refereed her second match & what an amazing job she did. She definitely took on the feedback to blow harder on the whistle!

Great job girls!!!
